Catchment Areas & Starting school
Catchment Areas & Starting school

The intake of pupils for primary and secondary schools is determined by age and catchment areas.

When should my child can start school?

A child whose fifth birthday falls between 1 March 2010 and 28 February 2011 can start school in August 2010. A child who is five before the beginning of the new school session should start in August 2010. A child who is five after this date does not need to start until the next August. If you would like advice about the best starting date for your child, talk to nursery staff or a school head teacher. There is no general intake of Primary 1 children at any other time during the session.

When should I enrol my child?

For all stages other than entry to P1 or transfer to S1 you should contact the school directly.
• For entry to P1 at the catchment school, enrol during registration week in January.
• For entry to S1 at the catchment school you do not need to take any action. In December your child will be sent home with a pack indicating the school where your child will be allocated a place. This pack includes a
‘placement request’ form should you wish to   apply to a non-catchment area school.
• For entry to P1, non-catchment schools, forms are available online and need to be submitted by Feb/March.
• For entry to nursery school, contact the nursery school directly to place your child’s name on a waiting list after his/her second birthday. Nursery schools are not managed by catchment area, so you are free to choose city-wide, subject to availability.

Catchment areas, which primary school should my child attend?

For every address there is a catchment City of Edinburgh Council schools non-denominational primary school and a
catchment Roman Catholic primary school.

Most parents choose to send their children totheir catchment schools but they have the rightto request a place in another school. This isdone by completing a non-catchment placingrequest form in December 2011. For both thenew P1 and S1 intake you can only make oneplacing request at a time per pupil. If your initial request is refused you will then be given a chance to make a second request. It is Council policy to give the highest priority to ensuring that all catchment pupils who want
to attend their catchment school are allocatedplaces. It is also the Council’s statutory duty to grant non-catchment places where there are places available. The committee decides on an order of priority for all placing requests. Remaining places are allocated, or a waiting list created, in the following order, on the basis of the shortest, safest walking distance from home to school:

• Pupils who have brothers/sisters at therequested school.
• Pupils who are resident in the Councilarea, and who do not have siblings currently at the requested school.
• Pupils who are not resident in the Council area, and who do not have siblings currently at the requested school.

You should note that if your child is allocated a P1 place at a school outside your catchment area, at S1 transfer you will be reserved a place at the secondary that serves your address, and not at the secondary which feeds from the primary school.

• Head teacher of the local school where are you registered
• Education Offices

How do I know if my local school is a good school?

The best way to find out if your local school is a good school is to ask other parents both those with children at the school and not at the school. Thereafter you can obtain a lot of information from the Scottish schools website which has information on every primary and secondary school in Scotland. Click on the link below and select your local school to find out the total number of pupils, exam results, free meal entitlement, absence record, teacher ratio plus the inspection reports.
