Attainment reports
are used as one of the benchmarks by which the council and Scottish Executive monitor schools’ performance year on year.
The results below are the
attainment percentage of P3, P4, P6 and P7 pupils attaining or exceeding their appropriate level for reading, writing and
maths in 2006.
The appropriate levels
as defined by the 5-14 programme are:
- Level A should be achieved by P3
- Level B should be achieved by P4
- Level C should be achieved by P6
- Level D should be achieved by P7
- Level E should be achieved by S2
The figures below are shown
as %.

Effective performance in education is
complex and impossible to characterise using figures alone.
The free meal entitlement (FME) is often
used as an indicative measurement of the socio-economic index of a school’s pupil population, although this is not truly
accurate if pupils do not exercise their entitlement.
Percentages are only one aspect of a
school’s performance and are not a reflection of its teaching abilities or contribution to a pupil’s whole learning
experience.
Finally, children usually do well at
school when parents actively encourage and extend learning opportunities at home. Parents play as much, if not more, of an
important role in a child’s education by, for example, listening and answering a child’s inquisitive questions,
reading bedtime stories, and encouraging activities such as helping in the kitchen. School is just a part of a child’s
education; combining learning through experiences at school and at home mean children flourish.
