Belhaven Hill School Achieves Record Exam Results Despite Lockdown

Belhaven Hill School’s Common Entrance and Scholarship results were outstanding again this year despite the constraints imposed by distance learning. All 28 boys and girls, aged 12 to 13, were accepted into their first-choice senior schools in England and Scotland, again demonstrating Belhaven's long-standing pedigree of high academic achievement.

Situated in a safe parkland campus near East Lothian's beaches, Belhaven Hill is Scotland’s leading co-educational boarding and day prep school for 7-13 year olds. The school will be celebrating its Centenary in 2023.

"Just shy of 80% of all grades at Common Entrance are A*/A or B, which is pretty impressive,” comments Henry Knight, Headmaster.

“The boys and girls have all done incredibly well, especially under the restrictions of lockdown and distance learning.  Their Common Entrance exams were completed under strict conditions at home and the papers were sent to the children’s respective senior schools for marking. Under the circumstances, this is as close to the real thing as is possible.”

Henry continues: “We have 28 children going on to leading UK secondary schools including Ampleforth, Fettes, Loretto, Marlborough, Oundle, Stowe, Strathallan and Uppingham. Overall, 16 awards and scholarships have been won between 20 of our children who put themselves forward. This is an incredible 80% success ratio.

“Out of the 16 awards and scholarships won, 2 were Academic, 5 in Sport, 3 in Art, 3 All-Rounder, 2 in Music and 1 in Drama. The awards, gained in subjects ranging from Latin through to Skiing, are real proof that Belhaven provides a broad and creative education. This is probably the best set of results in my 11 years as a Headmaster.”

This record maintains Henry Knight’s 100% pass rate at Common Entrance for his pupils and is a commendable note on which to conclude his time in charge; Olly Langton, who is moving to Belhaven from Radley College in Oxfordshire, will be taking over as the new Headmaster in September, supported by his wife Rosie. Olly originally graduated from Edinburgh University in 2004 with a First-Class Honours degree in History, so is looking forward to returning to Scotland.

Henry Knight concludes: “All of these successes reflect what Belhaven is really about: academic achievements and much more - doing a wide range of sports as well as art, music and drama. Our values help foster the success of our all-round approach to education - ambition, determination, perseverance, camaraderie, a life-long interest in the environment, and a good old-fashioned approach to manners.”

With a new Headmaster in the wings, various newly appointed senior teachers enhancing the staff room and the launch of a new Computer Science programme, Belhaven has an exciting future. These ongoing investments in extending the school’s s all-round education follow hard on the heels of Belhaven’s very successful Distance Learning Programme this term.

Prospective parents and their children are invited to visit Belhaven by appointment. Registration with the school will ensure invitations to school events and Open Days.
