Belhaven Hill School in East Lothian has announced that it is launching a new Pre-Prep School in April 2022, its 99th year, so that younger children can also benefit from its inspiring, all-round education.
Founded in 1923, Belhaven Hill School is one of Scotland’s leading co-ed day and boarding prep schools. Its 20 acres of parkland campus is idyllic, overlooking the wide sandy beach of Belhaven Bay in Dunbar.
The existing prep school has had a small class of 6 and 7 year olds for several years which has proved popular; the ambitious plans will see the school open its doors fully to 5-to-7 year olds in April 2022, creating three distinct year groups with space for 30 new children.
“Parents have been asking for continuous, holistic educational options from age 5 right through to the start of senior school at age 13, so we decided to develop a Belhaven Pre-Prep for 5-to-7 year olds,” says Headmaster, Mr Olly Langton. “We aim to give families choice throughout their association with the school – children start off as day pupils in our Pre-Prep and in the younger years of the Prep school and can choose to be boarders if they want to, as they move up the school.
“Belhaven is one of Scotland’s few remaining Prep Schools with fortnightly boarding at its heart. Boarding remains a popular option both for local families and those from further afield in Scotland, the North of England, London and Europe. We have a home-from-home environment in which to start boarding whenever it feels right for them and their families. Our friendly, family ambience helps develop happy, confident children.
“We provide the preparation that our pupils require so they are well equipped to go on to the next stage of their education, enabling them to choose any of the leading senior schools across the UK.”
Belhaven’s leavers go on to a wide range of leading secondary schools across Scotland and England from Fettes, Glenalmond, Gordonstoun, Loretto, Merchiston and Srathallan to Ampleforth, Eton, Marlborough, Oundle, Radley, Stowe, Uppingham and Winchester. Last year, nearly 60% (16) of the school’s leavers won awards and scholarships, ranging from Academic, Sport and All-Rounder, to Art, Music and Drama, which is a testament to Belhaven’s well-rounded, creative education.
The school offers an all-embracing education with a wide variety of sports and a broad co-curricular programme. Small class sizes ensure individual attention, and the school has a good reputation for its Support for Learning. Music is popular and more than 90% of pupils have their own music lessons.
Boys and girls are given lots of opportunities to ‘have a go’ at co-curricular activities without the fear of failure.
Olly Langton continues: “Our aims, ethos and values come from almost 100 years of education. The school continues to nurture children academically, morally, spiritually and culturally, to develop their confidence and sense of independence, guided by our core values of courtesy, courage and creativity.
“In extending the opportunity for younger boys and girls to benefit from the Belhaven educational experience, they can grow and learn with the school’s academically ambitious curriculum and enjoy being part of the vibrant Belhaven community.
“Our recent investments in digital and outdoor education have set the school on a clear path. Belhaven aims to prepare children to shape the world around them by virtue of an understanding of their immediate environment, complemented by solid foundations in computing.
“Outdoor education will hone their instinctive skills and connect them with the land in a way that is available to so few children today – the teaching of computational thinking will provide them with the tools for the future and give them the confidence to explore the endless possibilities that lie ahead. The desire and ambition to allow children more time at Belhaven to experience this blend of traditional and digital lies at the heart of the decision to extend the school’s education to 5 to 7-year-olds.”
Belhaven will be holding a Pre-Prep Open Day in September 2021 to allow parents to view the newly refurbished Pre-Prep classrooms.
