Impact of Parental Phone Use on Early Childhood Development

How does the behaviour of parents using their phones and attention-grabbing apps affect children under the age of 5 when the parents are not engaging with them?

If you haven't watched this TED talk yet, it is worth taking the time to do so when you have 7 minutes, perhaps when your little one is asleep or occupied, as a reminder for us all.

In her 2021 TED Talk titled "How Every Child Can Thrive by Five", 7-year-old Molly Wright explores how simple activities such as peek-a-boo can support children's development and how adults play a crucial role in shaping their future. The talk, a collaboration between TED and the Minderoo Foundation, aims to emphasise the significance of early brain development in children and its long-term impact.

Wright emphasises that a child's brain undergoes rapid development in the first five years, underscoring the importance of parental and caregiver actions during this critical period. She underscores the positive effects of engaging interactions, like "serve and return" play, on a child's cognitive, behavioural, and emotional development.

Furthermore, Wright suggests that interactive games like peek-a-boo can aid in fostering essential skills such as memory, trust, empathy, and creativity.
