Step Ahead Tutoring Celebrates 27 Years

This is the 27th successive year that Step Ahead Tutoring and Educational Services is presenting youngsters for SQA National exams at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher, and every year their students have excelled. Such is the progress seen this year that tutors are very excited for their tutees in the build up to the exams.

Step Ahead Tutoring and Educational Services was established in 1996 by its Director, George Hawkins, who hasnled from the front to this day, and was awarded a MBE in the Queen’s Honours s in 2016 for his work in education.

750 tutors have been registered in the past near three decades, offering over 70 subjects to an age range of  4 to 84 years, through one-to-one in the homes of tutees and tutors, mainly in East Central Scotland, and by Skype or Facetime for anyone anywhere.

George set up teams of tutors with specific expertise in : primary and secondary school work; SQA examinations; university entrance and support; university subjects; career development eg into the police, the fire service, civil  service, social work and teaching.

Hundreds of children, young adults and adults have benefited both in terms of being helped to build their self-confidence and also gain quite exceptional results. But Step Ahead has stood for much more than results – working with those with special needs; and those suffering in many ways; improving literacy and numeracy with disaffected and those from other countries.

One of Step Ahead’s busiest teams in the last decade or two has involved the tutors who have been preparing youngsters for entrance exams into independent schools. This year has seen the overall total of places offered exceed a remarkable 500 – in to more than 30 different schools in Scotland, England, Ireland and several countries abroad. In addition more than two dozen youngsters have been offered scholarships and/or bursaries.
