Whats happening at nursery this week

Children at Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis Early Learning and Childcare in Edinburgh have been :

Making CD spinners

Children at Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis Early Learning and Childcare in Edinburgh have been making CD spinners as part of Growing Scientists month.

The children used old recycled CD's, bottle lids and marbles to create their CD spinner. They also used a hot glue gun, watched on by Bright Horizons’ health and safety mascot Candy Floss, and tested the spinner once it was dry.

“We made predictions on if they would spin and how fast or slow they would be,” said Deputy Nursery Manager Kate Hubbert. “We had lots of fun spinning our CDs and this experience encouraged our learning through our rotation scheme.”

Baking activity

Children at Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis Early Learning and Childcare in Edinburgh have been taking part in baking sessions as part of the organisation’s Creative Cooks enhancement.

The sessions have been led by nursery chef Derek, with the children also taking the opportunity to ask him about his role as a chef.

“The children also practiced skills such as measuring and the ability to follow recipes cards,” said Deputy Nursery Manager Kate Hubbert. “Lots of turn taking took place and more importantly the children had a yummy treat at the end.”

Road safety

Children at Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis Early Learning and Childcare in Edinburgh have been learning more about road safety in recent weeks.

The children played a game of traffic lights in the garden where red meant stop, green meant go and orange was for jumping. The children understood and followed the instructions of the game and took turns to relay the information to others.

“They have carried out activities in their tuff spot with road maps which has further developed understanding as well as help develop fine motor skills, hand eye coordination and paying attention to detail,” said Deputy Nursery Manager Kate Hubbert. “To extend this interest further children have been looking at and borrowing books to take home based on road safety.”
