Alla Norrie: Children’s Piano Specialist
Since 1981, Alla has taught children. Her training was based on the Russian piano teaching method, which emphasises enjoyment and commitment. After qualifying as a teacher in the USSR, she spent 17 years teaching at a specialist music school with an affiliated music college.
Past pupils have gone on to Broughton Music School, Edinburgh University and Glasgow Conservatoire. And her own daughter Julia is a professional violinist and teacher.
Pupils are of a variety of ages and abilities. Some are preparing for ABRSM exams or auditions; others play for pleasure. Music theory features in every lesson.
Alla’s teaching is child-centred. While she often demonstrates techniques, there is constant dialogue between teacher and pupil. For Alla, it’s important to work out why a pupil struggles, not just what is wrong. She strongly believes a child should be given a say in determining what they play and how they practise.
