About The Nursery and School Guide, Edinburgh and the Lothians Magazine
The Nursery and School Guide Magazine was first published in 2014, when founder and editor Nikki Miller was looking for a nursery for her toddler whilst working a few hours a week.
She wanted a handy guide which listed all nurseries in her area with:
• age range
• capacity
• session times and the minimum session to be booked
• the fees and what was included in the fees
• how the nursery was rated on recent inspections by the Care Inspectorate
• a brief description of the outdoor space, particularly in a city where good outdoor space is often hard to find
She also wanted a checklist of things to look out for when viewing a nursery, as well as tips and advice about how to secure a place.
So the magazine was born!
At the same time, Edinburgh has an abundance of private schools, and Nikki wanted an unbiased overview of all the independent schools—particularly their size, facilities, fees, entrance procedures, recent exam results, and more. She also wanted to know how good her local state schools were.
Twenty-one years on, she has been publishing magazines with all this information and more, so that every parent in Edinburgh can use this data, together with their own research and recommendations from friends and family, to choose the best nursery and school for their child.
Parents in Edinburgh have reported that the guide has been their bible when moving to Edinburgh or welcoming their first baby, providing the best research in an easily digestible format.
While it was previously two separate magazines, in 2026, all of this can be found in one combined Nursery and School Guide, Edinburgh & the Lothians - Magazine.
This 108-page magazine is available to order for £4.50 (currently free p&p) and posted to your home, or log in to read the digital edition free of charge.
