Your child's funded nursery childcare and education (1,140 hours per year) is offered through the following delivery models at these nurseries: term-time and full-year options.
The statutory entitlement to funded early learning and childcare in Scotland is 1,140 hours per year for all 3–4-year- olds and eligible 2-year-olds. However, funded hours only start from the term following the child’s third birthday (or for eligible 2-year-olds) at a private nursery, playgroup, or childminder that is registered as a partner provider with the council, or at a council-run nursery. The City of Edinburgh Council has 102 local authority nurseries that provide either term-time or full-time places, offering specific models of how you can utilise your 1,140 hours over the year.
Term-Time Places √
Places tend to be offered from Monday to Thursday, from around 8am- 9am to 3pm, with a half day on Friday. This works out to around 30 hours per week, offered term-time only.
Full-Year Places √ √
These nurseries offer 50 weeks per year, Monday to Friday, with half days (4.5 hours) from 8 am-9am to 12:30 pm or 1:30 pm to 6 pm.
Depending on availability, extra hours can be purchased at £5.60–£6.10 per hour. (2025/26 rates)
Alternatively, they offer two consecutive days of 10 hours (8 am to 6 pm) on either Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday, plus a ‘Flexi Friday’. A ‘Flexi Friday’ is usually one Friday per month.

We recommend contacting the school’s nursery/early years office to confirm the hours they offer and to ask if there is a waiting list, as availability is limited. The information collected in this table may have changed since publication.
Remember, unless your chid is eligible for funding from 2 years, these hour start from the term after you child has turned 3 years so you may not get the full 1,140 hours the first year eg:
