Open day at Red Moss of Balerno
27 July 2025
12:00pm - 5:00pm
Suggested donation: £3 per person (you can donate in person on the day).
Did you know that Balerno has its own very special and rare raised dome peat bog at the edge of the Pentland Hills? This is the only remaining example in the region and has taken 10,000 years to form. It supports a wide range of rare plants and wildlife. Visitors will be welcomed by experts and volunteers who will explain the importance of the reserve and give tours. Children can go pond dipping from the boardwalk with specialists to explain what they find. All equipment provided. Insect eating plants and sphagnum mosses of many varieties will be seen, and frogs, toads, lizards, newts, birds, mud snails and dragonflies may be spotted. There is a quiz for older children. Adults will learn about the unique ecology and the rare plant life of this Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve. No wellies required.
