Stretching 22 miles from the Pentland Hills to the Firth of Forth, the Water of Leith oozes history and teems with creatures great and small. Here are some of the ways kids can get to know it better.
1. Join an age-appropriate, expert-led expedition. On the What’s On section of the website (waterofleith.org.uk) you’ll find lots of options. Besides bug-themed outings, you’ll usually find ‘River Dipping’ (5-10 years) and ‘Fairy Folk’ (4-8 years).
2. Go back and test your new skills once you’ve done an organised session. My 3-year-old daughter and I were shown how best to locate and return bugs, both on land and in the water. All you need is an old sieve, a white tray, a jar, a spoon and a sheet!
3. Visit the FREE interactive zone in the visitor centre. You’ll find 3 large interactive models, which give children and adults the chance to manipulate running water. NB: If it’s quiet, remember to ask for the displays to be turned on!!
4. If your child is able to read, they will enjoy the other displays in the café area. They explain the history of the people, wildlife, bridges and industry.
5. Take your child to the interactive sound area where they can listen to the creatures who live along the water of Leith. There are also plenty of photos of kingfishers, otters etc.
6. Book a nature party! For as little as £12 per child, you'll support this fantastic charity. Perfect if your child is outdoorsy and between 4 and 11 years of age. Expert-led party themes include: Seasonal Safari, Wilderness Survival, Water World and Fairy Folk. The visitor centre also has a good indoor space for (your) cake and poor weather activities organised by the staff. For more info.: https://www.waterofleith.org.uk/birthday-parties/
