8-Year-Old Edinburgh Author Publishes Debut Children’s Book “Ruby and the new school” – A Story of Positivity and Belonging

An Edinburgh schoolgirl is turning her own experience of change into inspiration for others.

Eight-year-old Isabel Hinova has just self-published her first children’s book, Ruby and the new school, on Amazon, after writing the story at the age of seven.

The story, influenced by Isabel’s own move to a new school in Primary 2, follows Ruby as she navigates the worries and hopes that come with starting somewhere new. With warmth and optimism, Isabel’s tale reminds children that being different is something to celebrate and that fitting in often starts with kindness and courage.

Isabel was encouraged to write Ruby and the new school by her Primary 3 teacher, who suggested she enter the BBC 500 Words competition. The story reached the semi-finals, sparking Isabel’s passion for writing and giving her the confidence to share her words with a wider audience.

“This story started as a way for me to help other kids who might be nervous about change,” says Isabel. “I hope Ruby makes them feel braver and happier about being themselves.”

Now available on Amazon, Ruby and the new school marks what Isabel hopes will be the first of many stories she shares with the world.
