We all know the drill when it's time for swimming lessons: the damp towels, the goggles that never quite fit, and the hopeful wait by the poolside. But have you ever stopped to wonder what actually makes a "good" lesson? I recently caught up with the team at SwimEasy, and what I discovered was a refreshing shift in how we should be looking at our children’s time in the water.
It turns out that teaching a child to swim isn't just about the physical stroke; it’s about a deeply considered philosophy. SwimEasy brought together over 100 members of their teaching staff to agree on five vital shared values, what they call their 5 Pillars of Teaching.
From a parent's perspective, seeing this level of collaboration and pedagogical thought is incredibly reassuring. It's clear that with this team, nothing is left to chance when it comes to your child’s development.

More Than Just a Lesson Plan
At the heart of their approach is a commitment to Organisation and Knowledge. We’ve all seen lessons that feel a bit chaotic, but the focus here is on meticulous preparation. Because the teachers have a comprehensive understanding of how children actually learn, using techniques like the BLABT method (body position, legs, arms, breathing, and timing) every minute in the pool is purposeful.
The Power of Connection
What really struck me, however, was their emphasis on Relationships and Delivery. It’s not enough to just "know" swimming; the teacher has to be able to connect. By using storytelling, imagery, and even land drills, they make the water a "brave space." When a teacher knows a child’s name and celebrates their specific effort, that child is far more likely to take the risks necessary to improve.
Feedback That Builds Confidence
Finally, there is a real art to Feedback. In these sessions, feedback isn't just a "well done" at the end of the hour. It’s a two-way process that happens in the moment. It’s concise, realistic, and, most importantly, designed to protect and build a child’s self-esteem.
Fast-Track Your Progress This Easter

If you're looking to see these 5 Pillars in action over a shorter period, SwimEasy's upcoming RapidTrack holiday intensive courses are the perfect opportunity. These 5-day "crash courses" are designed to build incredible muscle memory and confidence through daily consistency.
With nothing left to chance, these intensive sessions often lead to a massive leap in skill level in just one week. They are running this April at Forrester High School (6th–10th April) and James Gillespie’s High School (13th–17th April).
The Verdict
It is rare to find a programme where every single teacher is aligned on such a high standard of excellence. It’s clear that for this team, "Nobody does it better" isn't just a slogan; it’s a standard they’ve built together.
