To celebrate 21 years, the Nursery & School Guide magazines have joined forces.
The new, comprehensive publication, available to purchase here or to read online, is the essential resource for first-time parents in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Published annually, Nursery & School Guide was founded in 2005 by the current editor, Nikki Miller. A first-time parent herself, she had recently moved to Edinburgh. But finding part-time childcare for her 11-month-old child proved unexpectedly tricky.

“Back in 2005, you couldn’t use the internet to find nurseries. It was the yellow pages or bust! Even the independent schools had only basic sites. So I set out to create the sort of resource I myself needed as a young parent in Edinburgh.”
Today, the Nursery & School Guide remains indispensable for any new parent or Edinburgh newcomer with children.
For those on maternity leave, the magazine provides comprehensive listings of private care nurseries, with fees, facilities, and inspectors' ratings, as well as baby and toddler groups and recommendations for days out.
For parents choosing schools, there are application procedures, school-visit checklists, and guidance on school deferral. Alongside the schools and private daycare nurseries are listed by area with fees, facilities, and the inspector's ratings, the Nursery & School Guide also explains the other forms of childcare available in Edinburgh and the Lothians. This means families can tailor childcare to their needs and budget.
The Nursery & School Guide is arguably the most comprehensive tool available for parents researching state and independent schools. It features the only public listing of primary school attainment levels in Numeracy and Literacy. Moreover, state secondary results and rankings and independent school fees and exam results are all included.
So today’s parent can make informed decisions about their child’s future.
