As the new school term approaches, Stepping Stones Swimming is expanding its programme with three new venues set to open in Summer 2025. The addition of their new venue partners they aim to offer more choice to across Edinburgh & the Lothians for families to access quality swimming lessons easier for children of all abilities.

New venues include:
  • Currie High School – with classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays

  • Portobello High School – offering Sunday sessions

  • Whitekirk Hill – Our newest East Lothian location

New Pre School Classes Added:
  • Mercat Gait Centre – Pre School session Thursday mornings in East Lothian

Each of our venues offer small group lessons with in water teachers, a model that Stepping Stones has followed since launching in 2013. Stepping Stones remains family run by Ewan and Michelle, and while the business has grown over the years, its original values around personal, inclusive and progressive lesson continue to shape its approach.

Understanding Progress in the Pool

One thing that often comes up for parents is how to stay informed about their child’s development. While many swim schools rely on occasional feedback or end of term updates, Stepping Stones has approached this differently. As a team we have developed our very own custom built app, specifically designed to keep parents connected week to week.

The app includes:

  • Monthly updates on swimmer progress

  • A virtual award cabinet to track medals

  • Class info and swimmer profiles

  • In-app messaging with lesson content, lesson reminders and lesson updates

Rather than relying on generic systems, the app was developed internally to reflect how the team teaches, assesses, and communicates. It aims to provide transparency, build confidence, and let families celebrate achievements along the way.

"As we welcome new venues and more families into the programme, what hasn’t changed is our commitment to doing things properly, making swimming personal, and fun for every child. "

Supporting Swimmers Beyond the Basics

What also sets this swim school apart is the focus on continual development for its teaching staff. Over the summer, many instructors have taken part in training days, renewed lifesaving certificates, and completed in-house development sessions. These have focused not just on technical teaching but also on building swimmer confidence and adapting to different needs.

With small class sizes and teachers always in the water, the goal is to ensure each swimmer is supported at their own pace. Stepping Stones’ in-house awards scheme complements this structure, with regular medal milestones designed to motivate swimmers while giving parents a clearer picture of progress.

Getting Started

For families unsure of where their child fits in the programme, Stepping Stones provides an online Stage Finder tool. This allows parents to gauge which class might be right before registering, and the registration form itself guides you through the process to help place swimmers in the most appropriate level.
