Edinburgh Steiner School invites parents interested in the school or nursery for their child to come and tour the school on the 1st May 9 am-11 am. Here, Sarah Miller, News Coordinator for Edinburgh Steiner School, discusses the key factors that make the school special and a unique choice for parents in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Steiner School is a leading Waldorf school in the UK, established for over 85 years. It is a flagship educational movement, where pupils start later... and finish ahead.
Based upon the principles of the internationally renowned founder, Rudolf Steiner, Waldorf remains the fastest-growing holistic education, with a creative, academically rigorous, developmentally appropriate approach. In more than a thousand schools worldwide, we aim to develop a child's emotional, spiritual, physical and academic potential equally.
School At Six
We are the only school in the Capital that does not start formal learning until a child is in their seventh year (the norm globally).
Screen-free until secondary
Play is seen as central to learning and wellbeing. With no iPads in classrooms, our teachers are the ones delivering the internationally recognised Waldorf curriculum.
Longevity
In our rapidly changing world, having the same Class Teacher through most, if not all, of the Lower School years provides a haven of stability and continuity which is extremely rare in education.
Broad Education
Each Class enjoys the experience of a wide range of specialist subject teachers on a daily basis, including two different foreign languages from the age of six.
Pupils Aged 14+
Irrespective of whether pupils veer towards the arts or the sciences in their exam choices, they continue to receive a valuable grounding across all subjects through the cornerstone Main Lesson Programme.
Advanced Highers
Across the disciplines offered in 2026/27, complementing Highers, Nat 5s and the portfolio-based IE Certificate.
Integrative Education Certificate
Honing eleven creative thinking skills, the IE Certificate is equivalent to three GCSEs.
1:8
Exam Subject Pupil-To-Teacher ratios. 98% of pupils passed Highers in 2025/26. 2-in-3 at the top 'A' grade.
New pupils
An embracing cohort of up to 25 pupils per year. "My peers accepted me into the class," the Open Tour panel of pupils reply to one of the most commonly asked questions from parents of a young person looking to change schools.
Open Tour 1st May
Prospective parents will visit Main Lessons across the school: Class 2's Literacy, Class 7's Age of Discovery (History) and Class 9's Tragedy & Comedy (Drama).
