The Compass School ,Haddington are thrilled to report that at the Scottish Intergenerational Conference & Excellence Awards 2025 in Inverness last week, The Compass School and Our Community Kitchen were presented with an Excellence Award for their work in 'Confronting Age Discrimination & Stereotypes'.
This prestigious award recognises the incredible work and success of the inter-generational partnership which began in early 2024 between The Compass School and Our Community Kitchen in Haddington through the 'Growing Friendships' project. This has brought together older children at the School with their friends from OCK throughout the past 18 months to share fun, friendship and a whole host of activities ranging from gardening, music, art and dance to name but a few.
It is fair to say that a truly special relationship has developed between young and less young within our local community and last week, the incredible benefits which this has brought to all involved were recognised by the national organisation, Generations Working Together, in the making of this special award. There was strong competition from other fantastic projects in Scotland, so we are even more delighted to be chosen as this year's winners. We were delighted to be presented with the Excellence Award in front of the 100+ delegates at the conference.

Headmaster, Mr Mark Becher, said: “Along with our friends from Our Community Kitchen, we are delighted that our ‘Growing Friendships’ project has been recognised by this national Excellence Award and which we believe more widely reflects the strong intergenerational partnerships which are developing in our local community in East Lothian and which hopefully are an example and an inspiration to people of all ages in the rest of Scotland.
It has been a truly magical journey we have all enjoyed together and it has been wonderful to see the mutual understanding, respect and genuine friendships which have developed along the way and the great fun which has been enjoyed by so many.
We thank and congratulate everyone involved in achieving this considerable success!”
