School and a New Improvisation Short Course
This is the second annual Improvisation Short Course.
Improvisation Short Course (8–10 August 2025)

Looking ahead to the summer holidays, the school is also offering a new Improvisation Short Course aimed at young musicians aged 10 to 18. This non-residential course, led by Hilary Michael with assistance from Anna Michels, offers a unique opportunity to explore the art of music improvisation in a supportive and creative environment.
Designed for pupils with at least two years’ experience on their instrument, the course is open to those new to improvisation as well as those looking to develop existing skills. Participants will explore a wide range of musical styles, engage in group playing, and benefit from the insights of two experienced and versatile musicians.
The emphasis is on unlocking creativity and helping young musicians discover their own musical voice. Whether a pupil has never improvised before or is already experimenting with creating music in the moment, the course offers a valuable and inspiring experience.
Dates: Friday 8 to Sunday 10 August 2025
Fee: £300 (incl. VAT) – funding available
Venue: St Mary’s Music School, Edinburgh
