Since 1997, SwimEasy has been a cornerstone of the Scottish community, not just teaching children to swim, but fostering a sense of family and support that extends far beyond the pool. While dedicated to water safety and skill development, SwimEasy's heart beats strongest for its people. This is a principle vividly illustrated by the story of Nadiia Fisenko, a former Ukrainian National swimmer who found refuge, family, and a new purpose within the SwimEasy fold.
SwimEasy's Managing Director, Gail Smith, has always championed a family-first philosophy. This commitment took on a profound new meaning in 2022 when Russia's war on Ukraine forced millions to flee their homes. Among them was Nadiia Fisenko, a promising Ukrainian National swimmer whose dreams of competing were abruptly halted. The connection was made possible through a serendipitous link: Gail's son, Taylor, had previously met Nadiia before the war, and worked with her elder sister, Katya, in Singapore for many years. Katya now lives in the US and coaches swimming in North Carolina. With nowhere to go, Gail extended an open invitation and a warm home, welcoming Nadiia into her personal residence and the SwimEasy family.
"When Nadiia arrived, it was clear she had endured immense hardship, but her spirit was unbroken," says Gail Smith. "SwimEasy has always been about nurturing potential and providing a safe space. Offering Nadiia a home and a role here wasn't just about helping a member of staff; it was about embracing a new member of our family, a connection we were already so proud to have."
Nadiia, now a valued Progress Advisor and Office Administrator at SwimEasy, reflects on her journey with profound gratitude. Here, in her own words, is a little about her story:
"I'm from Ukraine. When the war started, I had to leave my home and everything that was familiar to me. It was a very difficult time, but I was very lucky to be welcomed here and given the chance to continue doing what I love most – swimming and teaching children. A wonderful family kindly hosted me, and that made me feel safe and supported as I started this new chapter.
Swimming has always been a huge part of my life. My dad is a swimming coach, and he was my coach too. He is still in Ukraine, continuing to work as a coach there while defending everything precious to us. Thanks to him, I grew up loving the water, became a competitive swimmer, and later started teaching and coaching myself.
When I arrived in Edinburgh, I was very lucky to find SwimEasy. Not only did I have the chance to continue my passion for swimming by working as a teacher, but the Smith’s, a kind and caring family also welcomed me into their home. Their support made me feel safe and gave me strength to begin again.
Working at SwimEasy has been such a wonderful experience. Every day, I get to share my love for swimming with the children. It is so rewarding to see their progress—whether it’s a first confident splash, a new stroke, or a big smile after trying something they thought was too hard. Watching the children grow in confidence and skill reminds me why I love this work so much.
I am very grateful to be part of the SwimEasy team and this community. Swimming has always given me joy and purpose, and now I have the privilege of passing that on to the next generation."
Nadiia's dedication and resilience are an inspiration to both staff and students. Her experience as a competitive swimmer brings a unique perspective to her role, allowing her to connect with students and parents on a deeper level, understanding the nuances of aquatic development and the importance of perseverance. This commitment to excellence is a legacy of the SwimEasy program itself, which has seen numerous swimmers come through its doors to compete on the international stage. SwimEasy alumni have gone on to represent Scotland and Great Britain at major events, including the Commonwealth Games and World Championships. The programme, led by a team of dedicated coaches and supported by the same family ethos that welcomed Nadiia, has consistently produced swimmers who not only master the sport but also embody the values of dedication and resilience.
At SwimEasy, nothing is left to chance.
SwimEasy's commitment to its extended family is a testament to its enduring values and its motto: Nobody does it better. From teaching essential life skills in the water to providing unwavering support in times of crisis, SwimEasy continues to be a beacon of compassion and community in Scotland.
