One of the most effective ways to nurture a love of reading is to start with what your child is already curious about.
Children are naturally drawn to certain topics. Dinosaurs, space, animals, inventions, magic, football or funny characters often capture their imagination long before reading becomes part of their daily routine. When stories connect to those interests, reading stops feeling like a task and becomes something they genuinely want to explore.
For parents, this means letting curiosity lead the way.
If your child loves animals, look for stories featuring adventurous animal characters. If they are fascinated by space or science, books about planets, discoveries and great inventors can open up whole new worlds. Even humorous stories or mysteries can help reluctant readers develop confidence and enjoyment.
It is also worth remembering that reading does not always have to start with a printed page. Listening to stories can play an important role in helping children develop vocabulary, imagination and comprehension. Audiobooks allow children to engage with storytelling independently and can be especially helpful for children who may not yet feel confident reading on their own.
Many families now use screen-free audiobook players, such as Voxblock, which allow children to simply insert a story and press play. This kind of simple listening experience can make stories more accessible and help bring storytelling into everyday routines.
The most important thing is to keep reading enjoyable. When children discover stories that match their interests, the habit of reading often follows naturally.
