George Heriot’s Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Carma Elliot CMG OBE as the new Chair of its Board of Governors for an initial term of three years from 1 July 2026. Ms Elliot will succeed Mrs Joyce Cullen, who has served as Chair of Governors over the past six years.
After a distinguished diplomatic career, followed by five years in international education, Carma returned to her native Edinburgh in 2025. She now holds a portfolio of positions across the private, public, and charity sectors, including as a Governor of George Heriot’s Trust since March.
In addition to the appointment of a new Chair, the Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of four further Governors:
Ms Anna Boni
Mr Shujaat Khan
Mr James Longcroft
Mrs Ashley Jones
All four new Governors will start their initial three-year term from 1 July 2026.
Ms Elliot comments: “It is an honour to serve as the Chair of the Board of Governors of George Heriot’s Trust. As Chair, I am committed to strong stewardship of George Heriot’s heritage and values, while supporting the Principal and all his staff in their mission to ensure every student is inspired to learn and distribute cheerfully. I look forward to upholding George Heriot’s proud traditions and partnering with staff, families and alumni to secure a bold, inclusive future for this remarkable school and community.”
Mr Gareth Warren, Principal of George Heriot’s School, adds: “On behalf of the School, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Joyce Cullen for her six years of dedicated service as Chair of the Board of Governors of George Heriot’s Trust. Her leadership, clarity of judgement, and steadfast support for the School's values and community have been instrumental in guiding the School through a period of financial challenge and continued development and success.
We are delighted to welcome Carma Elliot as our new Chair. Carma brings extensive international leadership experience, having served in senior diplomatic roles with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, as well as roles in the non-profit and cultural sectors. Her global perspective and deep commitment to education and the City of Edinburgh will be invaluable as the School continues to develop its strategic ambitions.”
