Winter in Edinburgh may be cold and wet but we all know how important it is for young children to spend time outdoors. Now all early years setting spend part of the day outside and forest nurseries spend a large part of the day is outside.

Research tells us playing outside, even in the cold, offers children huge benefits, boosting their immune systems, improving physical skills (balance, strength, coordination) through varied terrain. It enhances cognitive growth via unique sensory experiences (snow, ice), and building resilience, self-control, and problem-solving as they adapt to winter challenges. All the while getting vital Vitamin D and fresh air, which is better than staying indoors with circulating germs. Contrary to belief, cold air doesn't cause colds; it's often the close proximity indoors that spreads viruses. Outdoor play reduces exposure to these indoor germs.

Clothing is Key

Layers, Layers, Layers:

Base Layer: Merino wool or moisture-wicking thermals to draw sweat away.

Mid Layer: Fleece or wool for insulation.

Outer Layer: Fully waterproof, windproof jacket and trousers or a puddlesuit to keep everything dry.

Head, Hands & Feet:

Warm hats: covering ears, with a visor to deflect rain off the face also neck gaiters/balaclavas.

Waterproof mittens: (often better than gloves for kids) with long cuffs.

Wool socks : (not cotton)

Waterproof boots: such as fleece lined wellies.

Backup Plan:

Have spare hats, gloves, and socks readily available for when things get wet to have on rotation.

Recommendations of puddlesuits that are warm and actually waterproof

We researched via Facebook and nursery parents have recommended the following brands for toddlers to pre-schoolers who will be spending time outdoors in potentially muddy conditions, keeping durability and value in mind:

• Didriksons: This brand is frequently praised for being warm, waterproof, windproof, durable, and possibly providing multiple years of use as the clothes can grow with the child. The "Boardman" set is specifically mentioned multiple times as a good choice.

Mountain Warehouse: These suits were recommended because they were hard-wearing and very cosy; they're also usually on offer for around £20-so they might be less expensive than other options, making them a good option for outdoor environments where things may get roughed up.

H&M: Specifically if you are looking for a cheaper option. Make sure to check reviews of water resistance and warmth depending on other layering systems.

Decathlon's ski wear: Can also make a great cheaper option.

WEDZE at decathlon: Were highlighted as a good cheaper option, but these may be a better option for snow.

Spotty Otter: While very waterproof may need to be paired with a fleece-lined waterproof jacket, might be great.

Consider Second-Hand Options:

Several people suggested looking on Vinted for brands like Didriksons, Kuling, and Polarn O. Pyret for better deals.

Check with Your Childs Nursery:

There are Forest Nurseries that provide all the outdoor gear either included in the fees or have it available to purchase. Such as The Forest at Merchiston - they provide your child with their first waterproof jacket and trousers, fleece lined wellies and waterproof backpack.
