Pupils at St Leonards School in St Andrews are celebrating this week after receiving an outstanding set of results in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and Career-related Programme (IBCP).

Recognised for excellent academic achievement, having topped the Sunday Times Parent Power league tables in 2022 for IB/A Level results (A*-B grades), St Leonards is proud to announce an average points score of 35, out of a possible 45 points, and compared with a global average of 30.

An impressive 85% of pupils scored 7/6/5 (highest scores possible) or above in Higher Level subjects, whilst 84% of pupils secured places at their first or second choice universities. The highest-scoring subjects were History, Geography, Physics and Economics.

Isla Hutchinson from Balmullo, Lixi Chen from China, and Charlotte Eichhorn from Germany achieved outstanding scores of 43 points (equivalent to more than A*A*A*A* at A Level), securing places to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford and Education Studies at University College London (UCL), whilst Charlotte embarks upon an internship in neurobiology and sustainability. This score places the St Leonards students in the top 5% worldwide.

The most popular universities this year were Edinburgh, Glasgow and Exeter, with other destinations for the IB students ranging from St Andrews to Durham, Heriot-Watt, UCL and Aberdeen. An impressive 10% of St Leonards applicants have secured places to study at the University of Edinburgh.

Each year, typically one third of St Leonards pupils go on to Scottish universities, one third to destinations elsewhere in the UK, and one third overseas. This year’s international places include NYU and Madrid.

Commenting on the results, Simon Brian, Head of St Leonards School, said: “I am incredibly proud of this year’s outstanding International Baccalaureate results. They are a testament to the hard work and determination of our students, who have been prepared for life – Ad Vitam – and who I know will go on to do great things at some excellent and diverse destinations in Scotland, the wider UK and around the world. The St Leonards average score of 35 is an excellent achievement, considerably exceeding the global average. Many congratulations to the Class of 2023.”

This year has also marked the second cohort of students completing the IB Career-related Programme (CP) at St Leonards, graduating with a 100% pass rate for a second year running. The CP comprises IB Diploma courses and a BTEC in Business, offering a more vocational Sixth Form pathway.

Congratulations to St Leonards pupils on an excellent set of results.
