How my boss made my mother cry

By Rachel Winning

Working for Diana Baker Photography means my days are full of whoops and giggles as Diana works her magic on the newborns and children in her studio. When it comes to photographing my own children, however, it isn’t quite so funny as they are not tiny babies but hulking great teenagers who play rugby, netball and copious amounts of PlayStation. Foolishly, I didn’t get photos taken of them in the days when they were angelic and super cute, and yes, that’s something I really regret. But the thought of a photo shoot with them now seemed like a crazy idea – let’s face it, who has teenagers that smile?

But just before my eldest left for university, Diana knew I was wobbling about him leaving home and suggested we do a Mini Session. I loved the idea of having some photos of us all together (even though the kids were horrified!) so, for the first time since they were babies, we all rocked up for a family photo shoot.

Diana is hilariously funny so everyone felt at ease immediately. We took the rugby ball and the dog (top tip!) and we now have some amazing photographs of everyone having a genuinely good time.

Of course, I’m delighted with our gorgeous photos. But there’s more to it than that. 2020 has taught me how important family photos are. We, like many others, just never got round to having them taken regularly but the time has come where we really shouldn’t wait. It’s taken a pandemic to show us we can’t always rely on being able to see our loved ones whenever we want. Sending our new photos to my parents, whom I haven’t seen for ten months has, quite frankly, been incredible. They were totally blown away and Granny cried buckets when she saw them. My son even took a family photo to university with him. But don’t tell him I told you!

Outside Family Mini Sessions with Diana at Lauriston Castle are a once a year event taking place every August; call the studio now so you don’t miss another year.

Only £75 for a 20-minute shoot & 5 digital images, August ONLY
